Read: Psalm 72:1-11

This psalm is known as the Psalm of Solomon. Apparently, this is a Psalmist’s prayer for Solomon, who became king after his father’s reign. The prayer consists of a plea that all actions of the king be founded on God’s righteousness. This manifests in the king’s bringing justice to the poor, saving the children of the needy, and ending the deeds of the oppressors. This king would be so well known that monarchs from other nations would recognize him. In the long run, the Psalmist referred to someone higher and divine. The Psalmist then portrayed that this divine King will have dominion over the creation, and all kings shall fall down before Him. He will be feared throughout all generations.

Thought to ponder

There are three spiritual truths emphasized in this passage. First, the righteousness of godly leaders must align with the uprightness that God established. Second, God is eternally sovereign over all creation and has dominion over all earthly and celestial powers and authorities. Third, we must pray for godly righteousness for our leaders.

“For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold His face.” (Psalm 11:7)

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You.” (Jeremiah 32:17)

Prayer

Our God and Lord, You are our sovereign king who rules in righteousness. Let our leaders’ judgment align with Your virtues. Let their powers be exercised justly. Let them have holy fear in you so they can govern with wisdom. Amen.
