Read: 2 Corinthians 8:7-15

Paul’s exhortation to Corinthian believers regarding giving could also be a call to global generations of believers to support work for God’s kingdom. It is also a call to action: if believers are abundantly blessed with gifts for service, they might as well be blessed with the gift of giving. As it should be, giving to God’s ministry is done out of love for God, not compulsion. When Paul cited Jesus being rich, he referred to His divine stature, which He gave up by becoming poor through His work on the cross. He did this so that those who accept God’s grace will be rich in soul and spirit. Paul even mentioned the generosity of Macedonians in giving despite their poverty (vs. 2–3) to inspire the Corinthian believers to give to the ministry.

Though Paul’s encouragement about giving was specific to the situation of his time, the noble practices he advocated are relevant up to this time. . First, the desire to do good must be put into practice. Second, continue the good work started for God’s kingdom. Third, those who have much to give should help those who are lacking. Fourth, give according to what one can afford to give out of a pure heart.

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Hebrews 13:16)

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Prayer

Our God and Father in heaven, we are grateful for making our souls and spirits abundantly blessed through the Lord Jesus. Grant us the abundant spirit of giving so that many will know You and accept Your grace in the Lord Jesus. Bless more abundantly so we can share Your blessings. Amen.
